Technical Note: B200 External Controller wiring & user instructions
(D0108)
NOTICE
Please read & comply with all these instructions before commencing installation. Failure to install and operate this system in accordance with these instructions will invalidate the manufacturer’s warranty.
Please leave these instructions with the customer for future reference.
Always use these instructions in conjunction with the Installation and User Instructions Manual of the purchased Sunamp heat battery.
1. Introduction
1.1 General
The following instructions provide guidance for the installer and end-user of Thermino® TS heat batteries when used with the External SBC-B200 controller. Please note that Thermino TS products do not include a controller, so an appropriate external controller must be installed for the heat batteries to communicate with the chosen external heat source.
NOTICE
A suitable external heat source is one that can deliver flow temperatures of minimum 65°C, must achieve a minimum return temperature of 63°C at end of charging, and is able to operate using the temperature sensor provided with the heat battery. When using the SBC-B200 external controller, the heat source must be able to accept a volt-free hot water demand signal.
NOTICE
These instructions must be read in conjunction with the Installation and User Instructions Manual for the Thermino TS product (D0102). All installations must be carried out by a competent installer in accordance with local codes and regulations for plumbing, electrical installations and potable water supply.
1.2 Symbols Used
In these instructions the following symbols are being used to draw the user’s attention to information of particular importance.
WARNING
Indicates a hazardous situation that, if not avoided, could result in death or serious injury.
CAUTION
Indicates a hazardous situation that, if not avoided, could result in minor or moderate injury or material damage.
NOTICE
Signals information that is considered important but not hazard related.
1.3 Abbreviations
The following abbreviations are used throughout the document:
DHW – Domestic Hot Water
HP – Heat Pump
PCBA – Printed Circuit Board Assembly
2. Safety
2.1 General Safety Notices
WARNING
Only competent persons suitably qualified to carry out plumbing and electrical work may undertake installations, repairs or relocations of the appliance.
Product training on the full range of Thermino heat batteries is available from Sunamp or authorised training partners.
WARNING
Risk of electric shock – potential dual supply. Always isolate the power supplies to the heat battery controller before working on the heat battery.
CAUTION
These instructions must be read in conjunction with the Installation and User Instructions for the respective Thermino product.
CAUTION
Do not operate the immersion heater until the correct commissioning procedure has been identified and the unit has been appropriately commissioned (see document D0114).
3. Thermino TS & B200 controller wiring instructions
WARNING
All Electrical wiring must be carried out by a competent person and be in accordance with the latest local wiring codes and regulations.
Risk of electric shock – potential dual-supply. Always isolate the power supply/ies to the Heat Battery, external Heat Source and Hot Water Thermostats before working on the appliances.
NOTICE
Thermino TS Heat Battery models are designed to be charged by suitable external heat sources only (e.g. boiler, ASHP, GSHP) and are not fitted with a back-up heating element. A suitable external heat source is one that can deliver flow temperatures of minimum 65°C, must achieve a minimum return temperature of 63°C at end of charging, and is able to operate using the temperature sensor provided with the Heat Battery. When installing Thermino TS products with an external heat source, an appropriate external controller will need to be installed to enable Heat Battery and External Heat Source communication. The SBC-B200 controller is an external controller that can be purchased from Sunamp that works with heat sources that must be able to accept a volt-free hot water demand signal, and are compatible with the requirements above.
The settings below are applicable to the following products:
Thermino TS Heat Batteries when installed with the B200 Controller (see Figure 1 for wiring instructions).
3.1 B200 controller wiring instructions
Thermino TS models installed with an SBC-B200 controller must be wired as shown in Figure 1 below:
Figure 1 – B200 controller wiring diagram
The B200 controller software can be configured to charge Thermino TS heat batteries to different set points:
(i) Heat Pump set points (requires the jumper cable ‘Link 3’ to be installed between terminals FT and 0V on connector J3 on the PCBA – this comes fixed by default (see Figures 1 & 2 for location)
(ii) Boiler set points (requires the jumper cable ‘Link 3’ to be removed from terminals FT and 0V on connector J3 on the PCBA – (see Figures 1 & 2 for location)
Figure 2 – Jumper cable installation between Terminals FT and 0V on connector J3 on the PCBA to configure SBC-B200 controller charging set points: (i) fixed= Heat Pump set points, (ii) removed = Boiler set points

Temperature sensor wiring: Unroll the 4-core sensor cable and run it through the grommet in the battery casing to the controller. Connect the sensor cables to the controller as shown in Figure 1:
Yellow cable: Terminal S0
Blue cable: Terminal S1
Red cable: Terminal S2
Green cable: Terminal S3
Controller power supply: Run and connect mains power supply cable (3 core 3A, minimum 0.75mm2 CSA, 18 AWG) from the local 2-pole isolator to the Heat Battery controller as shown in Figure 1.
Brown (Live): Terminal 1 (Live)
Blue (Neutral): Terminal 2 (Neutral)
Green/Yellow (Earth): Terminal 3 (Earth)
The B200 controllers in this application act as a hot water thermostat. They run a hot water heating control signal from the controller terminals A1 and A2 (VOLT-FREE!) to the appropriate terminals of the external heat source wiring centre. Please note that the maximum rating of this contact is ~230V AC, 3A max.
